This mixed martial arts match up between Nate “The Great” Marquardt (25-7) versus Jeremy “Gumby’ Horn (79-16-5) will be a great MMA fight on the ground. Both fighters are known to be great jujitsu fighters but Nate Marquardt is by far much better than Horn.
Jeremy Horn has fought over 100 professional MMA fights and has fought everyone in the business. They say Horn has great jujitsu but his skills on the ground are no where near Marquardt’s. Nate the Great has so many accomplishments in pankration and Brazilian Jujitsu fighting competitions that his skills far surpass anything Horn possesses.
If you ever watch the UFC, all they ever say is how good Jeremy Horn is on the ground. Yes he is good, but not as good as the top level guys in grappling. He lost to Matt Hughes at the ADCC tournament when Hughes was only a wreslter.
Horn recently lost to average MMA fighter Jorge Santiago by way of a triangle choke at 3:02 of the 1st round. Believe me; Marquardt is way better than Santiago by a country mile. Nate has trained under Shane Pitts for three years and received a 2nd degree black belt in Japanese Jujitsu. In 2005, he received black belt in Brazilian Jujitsu from Master Ricardo Murgel. He now trains with one of the best MMA clubs in the world at Jackson Submission Fighting and he received a black belt from Greg Jackson in early 2006. Horn doesn’t have a BJJ black belt from a credited camp but has a black belt in Rosenbach Warrior Training Branches from Robert Bussey which is a fellowship of Martial Artists in the Midwest of the United States that is dedicated to promoting realistic and effective fighting combat principles.
Marquardt trains with Greg Jackson and Horn primarily trains at he owns club and Elite Performance. Recently, Marquardt was helping Georges St Pierre in Montreal to prepare for Matt Hughes so he will be coming into this fight in tip top condition. Marquardt was originally suppose to fight Thales Leites but he had to pull out due to injury. Horn took the fight at UFC 81 on January 9th and he just won’t have time to prepare for Marquardt.
What does Marquardt have that Horn doesn’t? Well he has way more experience n grappling than horn does and he has
1999 World Vale Tudo Federation Champion
1999 I.M.A. Rumble In The Rockies Champion
1999 Bas Rutten Invitational 4 Lightweight Champion
2000 Ring of Fire Middleweight Champion
2002 Pancrase Spirit Tour Champion
Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Ricardo Murgel
2nd Degree Black Belt in Pancrase Mixed Martial Arts/Jiu-Jitsu
Whenever Horn steps up to a higher class of fighters with someone that has more submission skills that him he loses. He has lost to Ricardo Arona twice, Randy Couture, Frank Shamrock, Ebenezer Fontes Braga Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Elvis Sinosic, Anderson Silva and Matt Lindland who all have better ground skills than Horn.
Yes Horn has been around the fight game for years but he is real battle worn. He will win most fights but when it comes to stepping up to the plate against more skilled competition he mostly falls short. Horn is beloved by the hardcore MMA fans and he is loved because he fights anyone anytime but that mentality leaves him little time to prepare and train fully for his opponents.
Bottom line: Horn does not the skills he use to have. The game has passed him. Horn does not have the striking power to knock out Marquardt who is all world on the ground and has beaten way better grapplers with much more expereince than Horn has.
This fight will be a ground fight as Marquardt will no want to keep this fighting standing. Once he takes Horn to the ground he will be about to pass his loose guard for either side control or full mount. Once Marquardt gains top position he will be able to submit Horn. In the end, Horn has not enough prep time to train for Marquardt and his ground game is not tight enough.
