Dreams Betting Review:
The quest to become the first Dream lightweight champion began with the DREAM 1 - Lightweight Grand Prix 2008 Opening Round and it did not disappoint as the fights were tremendous. Eddie Alvarez shocked the betting public and online sportsbooks by overpowering Andre Amade with his strength and striking power with a first round TKO. Alvarez came into the fight a heavy underdog against the well rounded striker from Chute Boxe. Alvarez was a 2 to 1 underdog and as we predicted in our MMA matchup report Alvarez the former Bodog Fight Champion would knock Amade out.
What everyone was waiting to see was the much anticipated super fight between Gesias Calvancante and Shinya Aoki. Both fighters are considered to be the top MMA fighters in the lightweight division in the world as both fighters are ranked in the top ten. However, the fight was ruled a no contest, after Calvancante landed illegal unintentional elbows to the back of Shiny Aoki's head. The ringside doctor wouldn't let Aoki continue and called the fight off at 3:46 of the first round. However, the fight will be rescheduled at the next Dream’s event as the first fight of the opening round of the middleweight tournament grand pix. Again JZ is a huge MMA online betting favorite by most online sportsbooks.
Mirko Cro Cop’s return to Japan was a successful one as he looked great against Pancrase veteran Tatsuya Mizuno with knees from the clinch. He finally dropped Mizuno as the ref stopped the fight 56 seconds into the first round.
Six quarterfinalists were determined for the next round of the lightweight tournament: Joachim Hansen, Luiz "Buscape" Firmino, Katsuhiko Nagata, Eddie Alvarez and Tatsuya Kawajiri.
Most of the online betting favorites won their first round fights and the question who will become champion is still in question. Joachim Hansen and Hayato Sakurai looked to be pre-tournament favorites.
The next round of the lightweight tournament will take place at Dream 3 on May 11, 2008 at the Saitama Super Arena and the next event will be the opening round of the middleweight tournament on April 29, 2008. The DREAM.5 Lightweight Grandprix 2008 Final will take place on July 21, 2008 at the Osaka-jo Hall in Osaka Japan.
