Dream5 started out with a great fight between Daisuke Nakamura and Andy Ologun. Nakamura pulls guard and immediately goes for an armbar. He secures the arm and quickly forces tap. Right off the bat the first fight sets the tone for the night to a roaring start. Up next were the Dream.5 semi final match between and Shinya Aoki and Carl Uno. Aoki works for a toe hold, knee bar and heel hook attempt. Uno spins out of multiple leg submission attempts and ends up in a body triangle on Uno. Aoki than takes his back and Aoki traps him into a deep triangle choke but he got out. As the second round started Aoki once again takes his back with a body triangle and eventually Uno turns into Aoki. As the round nears Aoki attempts a gogoplata. Aoki moves onto the final with Unanimous decision over Uno. He won the fight with at least 10 submission attempts or more. If you read our MMA matchup betting report we were bang on in our MMA prediction for this fight.
The next semi final match between Eddie Alvarez versus Tatsuya Kawajiri was one of the best of the night. Alvarez has surprised many with his great standup as he was an underdog in every fight at all the online sportsbooks. Despite a 14 and 1 record with 10 knock outs he came into this fight once again as an underdog as he was facing the incredibly strong Tatsuya Kawajiri. Kawajiri shoots in and attempts a guillotine. Kawajiri catches Alvarez with a huge straight right that sends him down. Kawajiri jumps on Alvarez with punches in Alvarez’s guard and does great guard pass into mount but Alvarez bucks up and gets out. From the stand up both fights trade huge shots and Alvarez rocks Kawajiri with an uppercut that sends him to the ground and than he send jumps on Kawajiri. The ref is forced to stop the fight as Alvarez pulls off an incredible TKO victory and possible fight of the year candidate. The cut under Eddie Alvarez’s eye was too much as his eye swelled up too much and he could not go on to the final against Shinya Aoki
After the first 3 fights Hellboy Hansen and The Black Mamba squared off for a reserve match in case either Aoki or Alvarez could not continue. Hansen comes in off and closes in on Gill and shoots in. Once the fight got to the ground Hansen started to impose his will as Gill’s ground game has always been very suspect. Hansen then catches Gill in an arm bar for a first round submission as we predicted in our betting report.
The Urijah Faber trained fighter Joseph Benavidez who was supposed to fight Kid Yamamoto but he had to withdraw due to knee injury. Instead Junya Kudo is called into fight Benavidez with a 6-1-2 record. Kudo puts on a great fight but Benavidez catches him with a vicious topside guillotine choke. Benavidez remains unbeaten.
Despite being in a car accident the day before Hideo Tokoro still was able to fight in Dream.5 against Takeshi Yamazaki. Tokoro was busier throughout the fight and even in Yamazaki guard he was more dangerous. Yamazaki and Tokoro trade positions on the ground from side-control to full-guard for the duration of the bout. As a result Hideo Tokoro wins a unanimous decision.
Controversial top ten middleweight Yoshihiro Akiyama took on pro wrestler/MMA fighter Katsuyori Shibata. As he entered the ring the entire crowd booed as he entered into the ring. Akiyama fought Shibata with his gi on. He used this to his advantage as Akiyama grabs his own sleeve, wraps it around Shibata’s neck and chokes him to sleep. A beautiful sleeve choke first round victory by Akiyama.
In a fight heavyweight fans have been waiting for Mark Hunt makes his return to the ring to fight hard hitting Dutchman Alistair Overeem. Overeem took the fight on short notice while Hunt came into the fight at a whopping 290 pounds. Hunt gets Overeem in side mount but Overeem scrambles out and pulls Hunt in and applies slaps on a rare keylock from his back. From there he applies an arm bar early in the first round. With only 4 days to train for this fight Alistair Overeem pulls out a submission victory.
Shinya Aoki and Joachim Hansen the two square off to become the first Dream Lightweight champion. Aoki takes Hansen down into Hansen’s half guard. Hansen accidentally kicks Aoki in the groin and gives Aoki time to walk it off. Once the fight starts back up in the standing position Aoki takes him down and applies a rubber guard but Hansen stands ups and dropped a huge punch to Aoki. Still in Aoki’s guard, Hansen lunges in with a left hand on Aoki’s jaw. Aoki rolls over and is hurt. Hansen pounces with punches and the bout is stopped. Joachim Hansen is the new Dream Lightweight champion.
