Davey ThompkinsWith such names like Cro Cop and Nogueira on our most recent UFC experience, us, the fans, were looking for some much needed excitement. UFC 110 delivered a solid performance that told us mountains about the changing of the times, and with that, I deliver “The 5 things we learned”.

Number one – Cro Cop is probably going nowhere. His performance against Anthony Perosh, although a win, was nothing more than a snooze fest. The killer instinct is gone, he even said in an interview he “took it easy” because of the cut he inflicted. In this day of MMA, there are too many young guys out there willing to get the job done and with no exceptions. I predict the fans are ready to let Mirko go if they already haven’t.

Number two – George Sotiropoulos just hit the radar. I am guilty of sleeping on the record George has accumulated, but I think that EVERYONE knows who this man is now. George’s complete domination of Joe “Daddy” Stevenson was too precise, technical and energetic to be passed off as a fluke and I think that, once his stand up catches up with his ground game; we could see a top 5 lightweight. With BJ Penn dominating the weight class, we needed a new reason to watch 155, and now we have it.

Number three – Wanderlei can still bang. I know a lot of people, including myself, were concerned about where Silva’s career would go given his last 6 fights. What I saw in his fight with Bisping shocked me. We didn’t see the recklessness that made Silva a fan favorite, we saw experience, poise and health that a man of Silva’s caliber should have. The legend in Silva shined and proved that, even against fresher talent, you cannot replace god given talent.

Cain VelasquezNumber four – Two words. One name. Cain Velasquez. What we saw during the main bout was something I think no one was ready for. NO ONE expected a 1st round KO. I look at Velasquez’s fights and see someone who has such control and pedigree for the MMA game that it’s only a matter of time before he wears that giant golden belt. What did UFC 110 tell us? Cain is a-coming. Run for the hills.

Number five – Big props to Australia. It was clear how respectful and excited the people of Australia were to have the UFC in their country. Even when a fighter against their countryman was introduced, they took a second to show their loyalty, threw some boos, then gave them the respect they deserved by cheering them on. I like people like that!

So, the next event we have heading our way is Vera vs. Jones, with Dos Santos vs. Gonzaga. It’s so hard to not be excited with so many prospects making headlines with amazing performances, and UFC Live was tailor-made for that purpose alone. Velasquez paving the way, we could see some amazing opportunity arise for a certain few fighters if they can pull out the win.
