Kimbo SliceKimbo Slice, or Kevin Ferguson in his previous life, became an internet sensation via You-Tube. Slice became known as an unbeatable backyard brawler. It is hard to say how many people have sat around and watched his fights time and time again.

That was until he was beaten a couple of times. It is said that he actually threatened people not to release videos of him getting beat. Quick, powerful and muscular, he often physically intimidated his opponents without having to touch them. Fear, you could say, was his middle name. Some of his videos showed some pretty fierce by products of his fists. One incident I remember is an opponent’s eye hanging from its damaged socket. But after being beaten on the streets a few times, one notable beating came from a police officer who came to meet Slice, he virtually disappeared.

After a long exodus, his name started flying around the MMA world with an excitement. I personally didn’t understand it though. The story came out that MMA legend Bas Rutten was training Slice to make a crossover into the ranks of the toughest fighters in the world. Many fighters dream of working with someone as well known and respected as Rutten. Given the chance those few would treasure this experience and see to it that they pour their hearts into it.

Slice got a lot of hype and even some endorsements before his first pro fight. Most MMA fighters start off as an amateur and once they have proven themselves in various situations, as well as make their name known a bit known, they go pro. Well Kimbo figured that path was apparently a waste of his time. His first fight was set up rather quickly and the craze began. Well known MMA companies, such as Tapout, endorsed him without seeing even one punch. Several fights later fans started to see that Kimbo wasn’t as good as they had hoped. He was however able to keep an undefeated record. His cardio and knowledge started to be questioned. Everyone started to call for him to take on a bigger or even a more meaningful opponent. Even as his promotional products were flying off the shelves, skeptics were still bashing him left and right. Slice’s next fight was built up as a main event and in a primetime viewing slot on a major cable network. The opponent was a less than stellar fighter with an average record who gave Slice a run for his money.  Although Slice won the fight it was noted that he barely slid through, some even saying that the referee had gave Slice favorable attention.Kimbo KO

Wisely, Slice and Rutten re-evaluated his workout and began to intensify his workouts to make him a more complete fighter. His next fight was scheduled with a much demanded higher caliber fighter in the infamous Ken Shamrock. Shamrock, an MMA Hall of Famer was commonly known as the “World’s Most Dangerous Man”. Slice apparently coming in a close second, if even being self-proclaimed. But before these two fighters could square off, the fight was called off due to an eye injury to Shamrock. Slice had a policy that only he supposedly followed, he would fight anyone, anywhere. So the organization decided to find a replacement. The replacement, better known as of late than he was prior to that night, Seth Petruzelli, was still willing and able to step in with Slice. Seth had been involved in the UFC’s reality show a few seasons back, but has been fighting for years. Petruzelli had recently come back from a year off of training. Seth knocked Kimbo out early in the first round. Silence fell upon the MMA world, followed closely by a gigantic laugh.

That fight occurred several months ago. Rumors swarmed around that the fight was a set-up, but others claimed it was what Kimbo needed to “wake up” and that the truth had finally been brought out. Since that night the Petruzelli has again fell off the radar but more importantly so has Slice. Nobody has heard much from him if anything since, no interviews and no major public appearances, nothing. Along with Kimbo the organization he was associated has fallen apart. People still talk about both parties every once and awhile. The majority of it being unfounded rumors that spread about including some that believe Slice will be fighting a few ex fighters, such as Mike Tyson, but nothing has materialized. The one thing we do know for certain is that Bas Rutten is no longer training with Slice, probably one of the smartest decisions he has made since taking him on.

My feeling is that Kimbo came in, made his millions, got embarrassed, came back to reality and then got smart and disappeared. I would like to think he has gone back to his birth name, crawled in a cave and is eating a big slice of humble pie. But that doesn’t fit his personality. I’ll give him credit as a business man. He made a lot of money in a short time by doing very little. Some of it was a bit uncalled for, but when there is a demand you may as well supply the merchandise. As a fighter…..he was pathetic. SO, may questions still remains….where is Kimbo?
