Herpes Disease in MMA So you have been training every day and have dreams of becoming the next Randy Couture, but have you thought about all the consequences? I know what you’re thinking; “cauliflower ears..ok i can handle that i guess. As long as I make a name for myself.”

We were all witness to watching a couple of the Ultimate Fighter contestants kicked off the show due to a herpes outbreak. What I found strange was the areas on the body these lesions were found. One fighter had it on the side of his neck near the juggler. Another had a lesion on his forehead near the hairline. During the filming of The Ultimate Fighter -US vs. UK, we were witness to yet another round of infections to the fighters. Richie Whitson contracted a contagious bacterial infection, Impetigo, on the right side of his mouth.

Jason Pierce then sprays disinfectant around the house where Richie has may have touched, while saying some ignorant bs about how he has never caught anything in his whole life and if he does catch Richie’s 'herpes' as he called it, he would impale him for it. When I investigated herpes through Google images, I came across one poor victim who had a massive herpes outbreak in her eyes.

Some people who have never had anything happen to them feel like they are better than someone who happens to get an infection. Well before you know it, Jason Pierce reports that he has a staph infection in his leg. Karma? Could be, but the odds would pay on the fact that he got his infection the same way any of us gets an infection; whether it be a cold or athletes foot: through contact. Staff is a very serious infection. Many people die every year from staff caught while in the hospital. It can beat most antibiotics. I wonder if any one made him feel like a piece of shit; the same as he did to Richie on the show.

The Broad Street Plague of 1853 was a cholera outbreak in London killed 10,675 people before they figured out http://www.ph.ucla.edu/epi/snow/broadstreetpump.html all they had to do was remove the Broad Street water pump handle. You see, one person would fill up a water jug, and then the next person would do the same, until the whole damn town is infected. Now imagine how many germs are spread between two sweaty, half naked fighters when they ground fight. Sweat drips directly in the eyes of the opponent on his back, while in the full guard position. I am sure we all have had that happen. What about when they are on top with a cut on their face? Now you have a stranger’s ,possibly from a 3rd world country, actual blood going in your eyes and mouth. Sounds riskier than unprotected sex with a drag queen…or my ex girlfriend.

Grossed out yet? I am.

Don’t get me wrong; I love fighting and watching fighters go at it, but now I can’t help but see all the pads and gym equipment crawling with all kinds of infectious bugs. When I go to the gym I always spray the equipment with their bottle of disinfectant, because you always see a gross sweaty mess leave a trail when they get off the machine. The real problem is; that for an hour after you workout, your body‘s immunity is very low, which give these pesky viruses and microorganisms a chance to take hold.

Never touch your face during or right after your work out. Never rub your eyes or pick your nose. These areas are mucus membranes, which bacteria thrive in. Your nasal passage is dark and moist and acts as an incubator for bacteria, kind of like the test you had to do in school involving culture samples in incubator experiments. I always use the inside of my shirt to wipe an eye.

So what can be done about it? Not much really. Enforce wearing a Gee at competitions (what about the head)? Test blood for infections? Paint the opponents with antiviral crème before each match? The crème may be the way to go. Get yourself a Costco size tub of Antiviral crème and apply it to yourself liberally before each fight, or hardcore training session. Maybe even put a few coats of the shit on if you’re fighting abroad. Whose knows…something to think about anyway…
